Fish talk again

I’ve had Bonnie for over two weeks now and yesterday was the first day I witnessed him ingest his food. He’s more active now and seems to be in good spirit. He doesn’t really go up against the tank much to provoke Donna. He spends most of his days making bubbles. Donna on the other hand, stays on the side of the tank closest to Bonnie’s and stretches his impressive fins and tail open. All day he stays in a state of “bring it on”. Bonnie doesn’t bring it on. I enjoy them equally. Bonnie for his mellow gentleness, Donna for his fight, and both of them for their beauty. We appreciate art so much more easily and willingly than we would with life. I think Bonnie and Donna are more breathtaking than any piece of art.

San Mao was a non-fiction writer. She wrote about her travels, her life in the Sahara Desert, in Spain, love, loss…I love her for the sensitivity in her spirit. Every little thing she experienced was loud. She was a rare individual who opened herself up so completely. There is a beauty in her surrendering receptiveness.

4 years after the death of her husband, she killed herself in Rong Zhong hospital, Taiwan. It was 1991.

I just picked up one of her books recently again, and realized how much influence she had on me as I was growing up. I feel lucky to have stumbled upon her as a child. I am sure many people could relate when I say there are some writers that just shape your life. She is one of them for me.
